Kings and Queens is a multi-disciplinary project designed to highlight the contributions of African-American artists to the beloved musical genre: Rock n' Roll. The project will combine monologues, live music, projections, dance and discussion honing in on artists such as Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Jimi Hendrix, Big Momma Thorton, Bo Diddley, Louis Gordon and others. Beyond noting the practice of cultural appropriation, the project will illustrate the influence of black musicians on their white successors like Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin, generally considered the greatest rockers. In workshop and performance Kings and Queens links the lives and legacies of black and white artists, the richness of their synergy lost due to racial discrimination and ignorance.

Everyday racism can come on slyly - a hasty glance or too-casual comment. Sometimes from a friend. Or a coworker. Other pointed or veiled aggressions play out in the classroom, on the street, on the national stage, in the media, at home - all the time. The cost of micro and macro aggression thrown against a white wall of racism is played out individually as Black Americans, and cannot be ignored. Adapted from Claudia Rankine's acclaimed book of poetry, this searingly provocative meditation on race in America is not a play. It's a fast-moving, fluid theater at the speed of thought.

Described as "not classical...but not not classical," string quartet and UMD School of Music alumni invoke dodge genre classification by tying together many traditions including bluegrass, Appalachian fiddle tunes, jazz, minimalism, and even 16th century motets to create truly unique contemporary repertoire, written by and for the group. The Artist Partner Program brings you the new Speed of Sound Sessions (S.O.S.), a celebration of musicians who support and promote composers whose work was created in the 21st Century and who respond to the contemporary world in which we live. The S.O.S. Sessions are a fun, interactive way to engage with adventurers just like you.
