This week at Arts Scholars...

Field Trip Sign Ups Are Now Open!

Your chance to sign up for the field trip of your choice is here! Students may sign up for only one field trip.  Slots are limited to avoid over-crowding so please sign up as soon as possible. Please sign up in the scheduler on ELMS by going to your calendar page, selecting the course on the right side (CPSA101/201), then click the "Find Appointments" button on the right. The field trips should show up on January 28 and 29. If you cannot see the field trips, please make sure CPSA101 or 201 is highlighted in the menu on the right side of the calendar page.

The deadline for signing up for a field trip is February 6th, but please sign up early to ensure your first choice trip. A $10 deposit is also required, please submit your deposit through UMD's online payment portal.


Arts Fest 2019
Mark your calendars and share with your friends and families!  This event, like no other on campus, features an exhibition of student artwork, performances, and presentations created over the duration of the semester from the workshops and sophomore capstone projects.  

All Arts Scholars participate in this event at the end of April which is held in the Stamp Student Union and coincides with Maryland Day.

Arts Fest Opening Gala: 7pm, Friday, April 26th

A Chinese New Year celebration will be held in the Stamp Student Union 1:30-2:45 p.m. in Colony Ballroom, Stamp Student Union, including Chinese cultural displays, make handicrafts, try on costumes. 3-4:15 p.m. in Hoff Theater: colorful performances of dancing, acrobatics, wushu, music. Free, but MUST HAVE A TICKET to enter the Hoff.

Fuse is a dance work that dissects the juxtaposition of minimality and maximality. Hapa examines how pain and labor lie beneath the pleasurable, paradisiacal landscape of Hawaii. This new play weaves the author's own upbringing in Hawaii with the island-state's imperialist history and tourist based economy.

This season, OperaTerps is producing their first full-length opera, Gilbert and Sullivan's satire on the aesthetic movement, Patience! OperaTerps is the University of Maryland's first student run opera company, providing undergraduate musicians the opportunity to take part in a major musical undertaking while enriching cultural life on campus and in the College Park community.

Experience all of the Six Solo Sonatas for Violin (1923) by Eugene Ysaye performed by graduate and undergraduate students as part of a total-immersion, semester learning project. The students will share their direct lineage to the Belgian master, explain how he entirely revolutionized the craft and the art, even how the repertoire links to some of the most prominent musicians of the Twentieth Century; then play, tag-team style, this daring magnum opus - the most challenging in the genre since J.S. Bach's model 200 years earlier.

The Jimenez-Porter Writers’ House is proud to award the fourteenth annual Literary Prize for Undergraduate Writing at LITFEST on THURSDAY, May 2, 2019.  Winners must attend & read at LITFEST to collect.
 
Awards:
1st place award (1 each in poetry and fiction):  $150.00
2nd place award (1 each in poetry and fiction):  $100.00
3rd place award (1 each in poetry and fiction):  $50.00
 
How, or Guidelines for Submissions: 
  • Poetry submissions must not exceed 3 pages, maximum 1 poem per page.  Fiction submissions must not exceed 3000 words.
  • To submit go to www.styluslit.org, click on “Submit,” and choose categories of “Jimenez-Porter Literary Prize” in Prose or Poetry.
  • Do not put your name or contact info on body of work. Work is judged anonymously, by an “outside” judge (i.e. outside of University of Maryland).

2019 MOSAIC Leadership & Identity Retreat

The MOSAIC Retreat is a two-day, one-night weekend retreat focused on exploring the relationship between diversity and leadership. Interactive sessions and group discussions are designed to create an environment for individuals to examine their identity and how it influences their understanding of and approach to leadership. The MOSAIC experience will challenge, grow, and develop students!
Program Details:

  • The MOSAIC Diversity & Leadership Retreat will be held at YMCA Camp Letts in Edgewater, MD
  • A pre-retreat dinner and orientation will be held on campus the evening of Friday, February 22, 2019.
  • Check in on campus will begin at 8:30 am on Saturday. Students will return to campus by 4:00 pm on Sunday.
  • The retreat fee is $25 which includes transportation, housing accommodations, all meals, a t-shirt and program materials. Participants’ fees can be sponsored by a campus department, office, or organization.
  • MOSAIC is led by trained student and staff facilitators from the Multicultural Involvement & Community Advocacy and Leadership and Community Service-Learning offices.
  • Interested students can apply by February 12 at go.umd.edu/mosaicapplication19

Community Service Leadership Opportunity
Good Neighbor Day, a community-wide day of service for Greater College Park, is seeking volunteers to serve as project Team Leaders for the 8th Annual Good Neighbor Day event on Saturday, April 13, 2019. Interested volunteers can learn more and apply at http://go.umd.edu/GNDTL2019 before February 18 to be considered. All are welcome to apply – students, staff, faculty, and community residents.
