Although the Civil Rights Act of 1964 legally desegregated the South, discrimination was still rampant in certain areas, making it very difficult for blacks to register to vote. In 1965, an Alabama city, Selma, became the battleground in the fight for suffrage. Despite violent opposition, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his followers pressed forward on an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, and their efforts culminated in President Lyndon Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965!

Where Are You Really From? Student stories of how they got here
Location: 1205 Cambridge Community Center
Date: Thursday, February 21, 2019 - 7:00pm to 8:30pm
In the United States, people move about 11 times in the course of their lives. Which means everyone has a migration story--maybe even a few. The migration story that resonates for you may be the one about how you came to the University of Maryland, or it may trace your family's journey to the United States from another part of the world. Whatever your story, it's an important part of who you are and how you show up on campus. At this Scholars "Migrations" theme event led largely by student facilitators, we invite you to share your story--from your origin to your path to Scholars, and how these experiences impact you today.  More information at An Invitation to Share Your Migration Story.

Silencio Blanco's silent, colorless puppets are charged with capturing humanity and giving voice to the voiceless. Returning to The Clarice after a moving creation residency and sold-out performances in 2017, this deeply empathetic company presents Pescador, an intimate experience that is dedicated to the lives of Chilean fishermen who face nature's overwhelming magnificence while navigating a lonely existence to support those they love. In this most transparent of installations, the tender manipulation of the austere puppets crafts a narrative that allows us to view the beauty and struggle of a fisherman's labor.
