It was well attended with over 35 participants representing over 20 museums and cultural organizations in the county.<\/p>\n<p>The following notes provide a summary of topics discussed and key points made by speakers and attendees, followed by a reflection of the event by one of the Certificate students.<\/p>\n<p><u><a href=\"https:\/\/umdmuseumcert.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/12\/use-img_20151208_171427_385.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-276\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-276\" src=\"https:\/\/umdmuseumcert.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/12\/use-img_20151208_171427_385.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Use - IMG_20151208_171427_385\" width=\"359\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/msmc.umd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/use-img_20151208_171427_385.jpg 3264w, https:\/\/msmc.umd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/use-img_20151208_171427_385-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/msmc.umd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/use-img_20151208_171427_385-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/msmc.umd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/use-img_20151208_171427_385-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 359px) 100vw, 359px\" \/><\/a>Dr. J<\/u><u>udith Freidenberg<\/u>, Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/umdmuseumcert.wordpress.com\/\">Museum Scholarship and Material Culture Graduate Certificate program<\/a> at the University of Maryland opened the evening with remarks about the purpose of the symposium. She highlighted the importance of <span style=\"color:#b90000;\"><strong>creating stronger links between the University and the cultural and museum organizations in the county<\/strong><\/span>, especially for the Museum Certificate students who are preparing to enter the field as new professionals. Dr. Freidenberg also explained that this will be a conversation about <span style=\"color:#b90000;\"><strong>\u201chow to best work collectively to address common issues and problems.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Four speakers addressed symposium participants beginning with <u>Dean Gregory Ball<\/u> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bsos.umd.edu\/\">College of Behavioral and Social Sciences<\/a> at the University of Maryland. Dean Ball spoke of his support of this event, having grown up in Prince George\u2019s County and fondly remembering museum experiences.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Dean Ball said,<span style=\"color:#b90000;\"><strong>\u201cuniversities and museums are significant cultural institutions which can change the conversation\u201d<\/strong><\/span> and incorporate new methods into museums and academia.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><u>Susan Pearl,<\/u> Historian with the <a href=\"http:\/\/pghistory.org\/main\/\">Prince George\u2019s County Historical Society<\/a> gave a brief history of the county, drawing on the rich cultural outlets since its founding. Cities like Upper Marlboro, Bladensburg, Piscataway, and College Park have had a long history of theater, art, musical performance, and exhibits which continue to thrive today.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/umdmuseumcert.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/12\/use-img_20151208_172540_657.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-278\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-278 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/umdmuseumcert.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/12\/use-img_20151208_172540_657.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Use - IMG_20151208_172540_657\" width=\"442\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/msmc.umd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/use-img_20151208_172540_657.jpg 3107w, https:\/\/msmc.umd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/use-img_20151208_172540_657-300x154.jpg 300w, https:\/\/msmc.umd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/use-img_20151208_172540_657-768x395.jpg 768w, https:\/\/msmc.umd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/use-img_20151208_172540_657-1024x526.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 442px) 100vw, 442px\" \/><\/a>The rich history and culture in the County that Mrs. Pearl described was echoed by<u> John Peter Thompson,<\/u> Chair of the Prince George\u2019s County Historic Preservation Commission. He spoke about the county\u2019s over 500 historic sites which provide opportunities to explore many aspects of the county\u2019s cultures and history. He spoke highly of the resources at the Prince George\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/pghistory.org\/main\/library-archives\/\">Historical Society library<\/a> open to anyone and located in the Greenbelt Library building with special collections pertaining to the county and beyond.<\/p>\n<p><u>Aaron Marcavitch,<\/u> Director of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anacostiatrails.org\/\">Maryland Milestones<\/a>, described the importance of \u201cHeritage areas\u201d as cultural landscapes created to preserve the meaning of these spaces without owning or restricting the land. He engaged participants to consider the benefits of making tourism work for the small and sometimes remote museums and organizations in the county.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color:#b90000;\"><strong>Think about local museums and organizations as an alternative form of recreation to mainstream tourist locations in Washington, DC<\/strong>.,<\/span> he exhorted.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The speakers set the tone for the conversations that happened around each table of symposium participants. Issues discussed included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How to better represent the diversity of the County\u2019s history?<\/li>\n<li>Addressing the transient population within the county<\/li>\n<li>Engaging stakeholders &#8211; getting people to care about and invest in cultural organizations<\/li>\n<li>Leveraging County projects like new construction and transportation outlets to get better signage for smaller museums<\/li>\n<li>How to better work with the public schools<\/li>\n<li>Uniting museum \u201cFriends Groups\u201d to discuss shared challenges<\/li>\n<li>Acknowledging what museum staff don\u2019t know in order to address gaps<\/li>\n<li>Creating new ways to track visitors<\/li>\n<li>Better awareness of home school opportunities &#8211; bulletin boards, parent groups, brochures, as field trip sites<\/li>\n<li>Use social media to connect with broader audiences outside of the museum spaces<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/umdmuseumcert.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/12\/use-img_20151208_171422_136-2.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-275\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-275 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/umdmuseumcert.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/12\/use-img_20151208_171422_136-2.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Use - IMG_20151208_171422_136 (2)\" width=\"315\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/msmc.umd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/use-img_20151208_171422_136-2.jpg 1436w, https:\/\/msmc.umd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/use-img_20151208_171422_136-2-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/msmc.umd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/use-img_20151208_171422_136-2-768x525.jpg 768w, https:\/\/msmc.umd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/use-img_20151208_171422_136-2-1024x700.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 315px) 100vw, 315px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once groups shared their conversations about common issues, Dr. Freidenberg asked<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color:#b90000;\"><strong>\u201cWhat are your organizations are good at? How can we use these successes to help each other?\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some responses included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/greenbeltmuseum.org\/\">Greenbelt Museum<\/a> attracts different niche audiences (historic preservation, art history, Art Deco appreciation, architectural groups, schools, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laurelhistoricalsociety.org\/\">Laurel Historical Society<\/a> is good at engaging their \u201chyper local\u201d community in Laurel<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pgelegantsettings.com\/Our_Sites\/Riversdale_House_Museum.htm\">Riversdale Mansion<\/a> has had success with their free public programs like concerts and lectures which attract repeat visitors<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pgaamcc.org\/\">Prince George\u2019s African American Museum and Cultural Center <\/a>works well with schools in the county, especially with their \u201cMuseum in a box\u201d program which sends their exhibits out to libraries and schools<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Then the discussion led to ideas about<span style=\"color:#b90000;\"><strong> improving communication and resource access <\/strong><\/span>between the University of Maryland, College Park and the County museums and organizations. Comments included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How to connect students with organizations for class projects and internships\n<ul>\n<li>The Prince George&#8217;s Historical Society reported 5 graduate students working on projects through word-of-mouth references<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Can county organizations have access to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.umd.edu\/\">University library resources<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>Two-way sharing between individual organizations and the Museum Certificate program via website (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.umdmuseumcert.wordpress.com\">umdmuseumcert.wordpress.com<\/a>).\n<ul>\n<li>Announce events, internships, write a guest post about an important topic, or contribute an exhibit review, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Contact the Museum Certificate program about hosting the Certificate&#8217;s graduate class on a tour of your museum, or hosting a graduate student for their <a href=\"https:\/\/umdmuseumcert.wordpress.com\/for-students\/courses\/practicum-project\/\">practicum project<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#b90000;\">Reflection from a Student<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sarah Janesko<br \/>\nMasters of Applied Anthropology Student<br \/>\nMuseum Scholarship and Material Culture Certificate student<br \/>\nClass of 2016<\/p>\n<p>This event was successful in bringing people together in a single room to talk about relevant issues. It was successful because everyone who attended cares about their organization and community. It was successful because participants were not afraid to talk about what is lacking in their organizations, and about what goes right.<\/p>\n<p>There is a lot to be said for the presence of University faculty, a dean, students <em>and<\/em> local museum and material cultural professionals starting a conversation together in one room. However, big issues were discussed that can&#8217;t be easily solved in 2 or 3 hours. Getting to &#8220;success&#8221; in the long-term will involve action by all parties to <em>continue<\/em> the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>It felt similar to our seminars as part of the Certificate program. Students discuss scholarship issues around the classroom table and then visit museums and talk to the directors and curators about how they handle community partnership, collections management, accessibility, diversity and many other issues. Understanding how different museums implement the scholarship in their daily work and programs is critical to reproducing those successes elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully, this is what the Symposium has started with the museums in Prince George&#8217;s County &#8211; thinking about 1) what programs, initiatives and goals were successful, and 2) the ways to receive help from and 3) give help to other museums and organizations working toward similar goals.<\/p>\n<p>Has your school, organization, museum, historical society had luck with partnerships like this?
